Gun Ownership - 2nd Amendment Rights

Current
Situation

Within the last few decades, politicians here in the United States have initiated efforts to ban and restrict gun ownership rights.  The right of self defense is perhaps the most basic inalienable right, and that's one reason why the second amendment was adopted.
The need for national defense has renewed focus due to the events of Sept 11, 2001.  Gun ownership by private citizens really is needed not only for hunting and sport, but also for national defense.  Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld himself has stated that government can't defend all places at all times.  Since our government does not have to ability to protect citizens from violence, one would think the bureaucrats in Washington would at least permit citizens to protect both themselves and our nation.

Guns inappropriately become a scapegoat in the minds of some victims because they perceive the gun itself to have caused their loss.  Gun ownership helps citizens avoid becoming a victim, and government should not deny citizens the means to protect themselves.  To address concerns by victims, government should vigorously enforce laws against violent crime, and facilitate restitution by criminals for their victims.

Proposed
Changes
Review gun ownership restrictions, and repeal requirements that violate the intent of the second amendment.

Revising the war on drugs, as described in a separate issue statement, would free up police and prison resources that can be used to fight violent crime.  Reduction of violent crime will alleviate the drive for anti gun ownership advocates to reduce 2nd amendment freedoms.

Expected
Benefits
The security of individual citizens will continue to be enhanced by citizen's ability to defend themselves and their families.
